Finishes
Since we are a custom millwork shop, we provide custom finishing also.
We offer a range of finishing options that we provide on a regular basis, but we
are also open to trying a particular product that the client would like used, as
long as its meets or exceeds our standards for quality and safety.
Colour
Our finishing department has proven itself at being very adept at matching
stain colours. Once a colour control sample provided by the client, we can
usually have a sample generated within a week. This process will take
longer if polyester is being used for the finish, due to the extra labour
required. The sample is then returned to the
client, along with the control sample provided, to allow the client to approve
the colour match before any stain is actually applied to the furniture.
Final Finish
We use five main final products quite regularly each with their own
advantages and applications.
All of the following final finishes are available in a variety of sheens, with
the exception of the Danish antique oil.
- Polyester
- this product has the benefits of a high hardness (80 mar) and sheen
(95degree), along with full fill capabilities. This product’s recommended application is a horizontal
surface in which a long finish life is desired. The thickness of this finish coat is quite high, around 20
mils, which means that it is better suited for edge profiles that do not
contain too much detail. More
information on KP Manufacturing’s polyester finish can be found here.
- Krystal -
this product has a superior hardness, when compared to nitro cellulose
lacquers and enamels, and is also capable of a full fill. This product
does not contain nitro cellulose and therefore will not yellow in time.
The thickness of the Krystal finish coat is not as high as the polyester,
between 3 and 6 mils, which makes it more suitable for detailed edges.
This finish coat's recommended application would be on a light colour, such
as natural maple or anigre, where it would be less than desirable to have a
final finish turn yellow with age.
- Resistant
- this pigmented varnish is great when a solid colour is required.
With a hardness of 40 mar and sheens available up to 80 degrees, this final
finish is recommended when a painted look is desired on the furniture
surface.
- Standard
- our standard finish is a catalyzed varnish with a hardness of 28 mar.
The standard finish still has the capability of a full fill finish and is
available in sheens up to 85 degrees. This final finish is recommended
for applications where moisture or chemical resistance is needed from a high
performance varnish.
- Danish
antique oil - this clear penetrating oil gives an antique look similar to a
hand rubbed finish. The oil seals the pores of the wood and helps to
withstand stains and dirt.
